LED : The Future of Nano Reefing?

LED lighting in becoming one of the hottest topics in the reefing industry. With break through LED's maxing out at ~150 lumens per watt these tiny lights are ready for our niche market. As of now there are not to many options for LED fixtures that wont burn a whole in your pocket and only a few companies that are making them. Unfourntunitly Orbitech has a patent that is holding many people back from making fixtures but the reefing community is coming together and trying to put an end to Orbitech's patent shanagans.

With how small our nano tanks are LED's are only perfect for our application. Rather than having a giant MH or long T5 fixture you can simply have 6-12 LED's to illuminate your entire tank. Imagine being able to change your spectrum without having to go out and buy $15-$30 bulbs, strategically placing LED's where you plan on placing corals so you have no wasted light and saving energy at the same time? The possibilities are endless with LED's and they are only going to get better.

Some nano idea's with LED's.
  • Mangrove/Seagrass Biotope - Using 6500K LED's to illuminate the mangroves for a more natural approach and the front side mixed with blue and white's. After the mangroves mature imagine the cool effect of the light spilling through the mangroves leaves and roots?
  • Boomie/Patch Reef - One island/boomie with a mix of acro's, favia's, monti's and nuking them with a 12 LED spotlight. The only focus on the tank is the boomie and nothing else.
  • NPS tank - A few LED's spread out around the tank only focusing on the NPS corals. 22K look on different Rhizo's and Carnation corals.
This only scratches the surface with LED's and our nano boxes. I will follow up on this post with a more detailed look into LED's and how to set them up.
